It’s beyond me how the U.S. GOP has come to be totally dominated by fundamentalist Christians (Christofacists) anti-science nuts, greedy super rich tycoons and ignorant male chauvinist men and women. Can one of these frightening individuals ever be elected to the presidency? The possibility is terrifying for the U.S. and the world as a whole. It won’t probably pass this time, but it could be possible in the future if prejudices, ignorance and decadence continue unabated.
I believe that at least some of the GOP candidates are not as ignorant or stupid as they make themselves appear, and I believe that most of them would not be totally absurd if they came to occupy the Oval Room, but the problem is that they have to fake stupidity, ignorance, bigotry and plenty of bias if they ever want to be taken seriously in the primaries.
How has the U.S. arrived to this point?…. Decadence may be? The answer is not that simple. Ignorant and biased people have been there all the time, as they are everywhere, but deindustrialization, globalization, rising inequality and racial diversity have opened the door to an extremism that preaches simple solutions for complex problems, and as it’s always the case, uses old ideas and patriotic clichés to move emotions instead of reason.
Mr. Trump is not really stupid, at least not as much as Sarah Palin, but he can utter insults, falsities and exaggerations with the security that all those angry white folks (and some non-white too) will believe he has the magical key to go back to a brilliant past that never really existed.
